SABR HOLDS WITHIN IT BEAUTY

"The relation of patience to iman is like the realtion of the head to the body. If the head is chopped off, the body becomes useless." Then he raised his voice and said  "Certainly, the one who has no patience has no iman, and patience is like a riding-beast that never gets tired"

- Ali ibn Abu  Talib (ra)

salaam,

you left me a really nice reply to my blog entry. Though I agree with you on the essence of your reply, I don't agree with you on some points, that I was meaning in my blog entry. I'm going to reply to you with the points made in my entry...

I would take it ... that is an honor and a blessing that someone could look at you and recongnize you as a muslim or someone can read your name and recongnize that as a name MUSLIM name.

Recognize that you are a Muslim? How, exactly do you recognize someone as a muslim based on race (South-Asian-American and Arab-American)? There is nothing Islamic or Muslim about being South Asian or Arab-American. If anything being mistaken as a Muslim because you are, is only a stereotype about people of those races.

We should not feel "honored" or "blessed" religiously, becuase of the race we are... If anything that would only encourage racism becuase that would set an idea that Muslims are only South Asian and Arab... and that would show disrespect to the black, white, chinese, hispanic, etc Muslims that are out there. Just imagine some Arab girl saying to a Latina that she looked more Muslim. We should leave such ideas to those who thrive in ignorance, and not feel blessed becuase of it.

Even further we should recognise that us being profiled as possibly being Muslim is not always a good thing. What if suddenly someone recognized that you are Muslim becuase your husband may beat you? becuase your family may support honor killings? because your brother may hate Israel? Should Muslims feel "honored" and "blessed" to be profiled as Muslims because of those reasons? I don't think so. For non-Muslims to attach Islam to those things is one thing, but for Muslims, ourselves, to attach Islam to those things is different--- we should know the truth about Islam and what is right and what is wrong.

We should not try to "cut-down" our identities as muslims at all; regardless of wheather we are looked at suspiciously by others or not. If others stop identifying us as muslims...then tht means they are identifying us as something other then ... and that means we are walking one step closer to being recongnized as a non-muslim.

There is nothing religious about a race of people. There is nothing religious about your eyes, nose, lips, or skin color. These traits are not Islamic ones, therefore they should never identify us as Muslims. Neither we should encourage them to look more Muslims aswell.

Also look at the world, people are not identifying us as Muslims for good reasons.

So never 'feel' for those that look like muslims or have beautiful blessed muslim names for even if they are going through tough times...

No, I will always feel for those that are being religiously profiled becuase of their race. I will also feel for those that are being profiled becuase of their names. Not every Arabic or South Asian name is a Muslim name by the way, and this is what many are being profiled on... simply because their names are not European, Hispanic, or African sounding. Very much so Arabic soudning... therefore cause for concern. Again, we should not confuse culture with Islam, which sadly the Ummah has done in the case of the Arabian culture.

You used the word "foreign name" but these are the names that were adopted by the sahabas, tabieen and the taba tabieen. So let's insha'Allah pray for the muslim ummah and their situation and not 'feel' for them :)

I used "foreign name" becuase I am not an Arab or South Asian, therefore much of thier names are foreign to me... and again, many of their names have no Islamic standing.

Thank you for your reply though.

salaam

Clarification. I am saying "look more Muslim" based on race.

salaam,

what got to me about ur comment is when you said : I don't mean to sound racist, but I view the fact that I am black and I have a non-Arabic sounding name as a good thing in this day of time.

and I based my answer on that comment of yours. NOT RACE.

You say that your comment has nothing to do with race, but you base your reply based on a statement which I was talking about race. Key words that I used: racist, black, and non-Arabic. I never mentioned anything about a beard, hijab, thobe, niqab, etc.

But besides the point, I told you that I was going to reply to you based on what I was saying in my entry, so we'll just call this a miscommuncation.

but the way,nice layout.
